Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! It is suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the elderly, treating a wide variety of conditions.

When administered correctly, acupuncture should not hurt. Needles are fine, the same width as a human hair. They are all sterile, single-use and are safely disposed of once removed. The acupuncturist will insert the needles as painlessly as possible. Many people find it calming and relaxing. You may feel a tingling sensation or a dull ache, which is a sign that the body's Qi has been stimulated. Some people may feel tired afterwards.

Acupuncture has virtually no unpleasant side effects and is a very safe treatment. Any side effects that do occur will be mild and will self-correct. There may be some minor bruising at the needle point as the Qi settles. Remember that as it is a holistic treatment, the body will try to re-balance and correct itself. As a member of the British Acupuncture Council, Carla follows strict codes of Professional Conduct and Hygiene and Safety.

Wear loose-fitting clothes so that acupuncture points on the limbs can be easily accessible. Try not to have a large meal within an hour of your treatment. Please don't scrape your tongue if you remember as this will change the appearance and coating which are useful for diagnosis.

That all depends on your condition. You may start to feel the benefit after one or two sessions but with a chronic health problem it is likely to take longer. Once you are stabilised, you may only need a 'top up' every few weeks. TCM is also excellent as preventative healthcare and can be used to 'retune' the body.

This will vary depending on the condition. It can be anything from a month to 6 months to longer. Initial prescriptions are usually for 2 weeks in order to assess suitability and to monitor side effects.
